Bach- Piano Concerto no.7

Young Glenn Gould

One major difference of music with other arts in my opinion is the need of a performer in music. In looking at a painting, or reading a book you have just the artist and your mind to observe what the artist meant. But this is not true when you listen to the music. It’s probable that you distaste a piece performed poorly and vice versa. There’s a great diversity between what this and that virtuoso plays, or between different conductors and orchestras. There’s taste of one other human having an important role before you can get to the original artist.
Especially after Wanda Landowska, who played Bach on Harpsichord with her famous word: “You play however you want, I play the way HE played!”, there was this belief that one shouldn’t play Bach on the Piano.

Young Glenn Gould

But when it came to Glenn Gould, there was no other choice than to enjoy the way he played and it was time to change minds. I believe that listening to Gould playing Bach is just a part of the enjoyment, and a little part. You should watch the way he performs and then you can say that you’ve understand a little of the way Gould plays Bach! With no doubt he was a great pianist, but the way he had played Bach has made him eternal in music history. He is intertwined with the music he plays. I had a comment that he believed that Bach’s music is mechanical. I think he hasn’t heard and of course has not seen Gould. Bach in my opinion needs a better understanding of music to enjoy from. It’s in no way mechanical, but it’s the music itself. And the way Glenn Gould performs this, will take you into its most internal layers.

Glenn Gould

I’d better link to GlennGould.com, for a good biography of his life.

Here I’ve selected Bach Seventh Piano Concerto for you. It’s performed by Columbia Symphony Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Golschmann, and Glenn Gould as the Pianist. First Movement, Second Movement, Third Movement.

    Hi:

I have Goldberg Variations played by Gould (which includes the humming) and I sometimes wake up with the (First) Ario, and if I am lazy and don’t get up the next variation does its job. I haven’t seen any music video’s by G but have seen his photos and the way he plays piano, sitting on his special worn out chair!

There is no doubt that B’s music is multilayered and at times complicated and very advanced in terms of composition, and of course enjoyable. It doesn’t contradict with the fact that it is mechanical. It is not a matter of enjoyability, but a matter of style.

By mechanical I mean that a simple MIDI rendering of Bach retains (at least) some of its music quality. Of course it is not comparable to GOULD’s version. Some time ago I read on wikipedia (under Bach) that his melodies imply emotion rather than convey it, that may be the cause of my feeling.

I challenge you to do the same (Simple Midi Rendering = SMR) for a piece of music from the Romantic Period. You simply can’t do that.

I find his movements of his concertos monotone (a feature common in Baroque). I am not saying it is a bad thing. It may be that it is not my favorite style for writing a concerto but doesn’t stop me from appreciating it.

Anyway, thanks for the piece. what is its number in BWV format?

Oops! There is a typo in my previous message.

It should be “music videos” instead of “music video’s”.

Damn! I keep noticing typos! It should be “Aria” not “Ario”.
