به عنوانِ احتمالاً آخرين کنسرتوی انتخابی‌ام از بتهوون، قسمت دوم از کنسرتوی شماره چهارش را انتخاب کرده‌ام. غير از علاقه‌ی فراوان‌ام به اين قطعه، بيش‌تر به خاطر محدوديت‌های اندازه‌ی فايل اين قسمت را انتخاب کرده‌ام، اگر نه تمام کنسرتو را آپلود می‌کردم. به هر حال، شديداً توصيه می‌کنم که کل کنسرتو را بيابيد و گوش کنيد.
اين کنسرتو در سال 1805-1806 نوشته شد و توسط خودِ بتهوون در مارس 1807 در کاخ حامی و پشتيبان بتهوون، پرنس لوبکوويتز اجرا شد. اما تنها در بيست و دوی دسامبر 1808 بود که مردم توانستند در يک ماراتن موسيقی، در سالن تئاتر وين اين قطعه را برای اولين بار بشنوند. برنامه با سمفنونی شماره‌ی شش بتهوون آغاز شد، سپس آريای “Ah, perfido”، به دنبال آن دو موومان از مس در دو ماژور، سپس کنسرتو پيانوی شماره‌ی چهار، سمفونی شماره‌ی پنج و در انتها هم کرال فانتزی!
به خاطر مشکل شنوايی، بتهوون به دنبال تکنوازی بود که بتواند کنسرتو را اجرا کند. نخستين تک‌نوازی که تماس گرفت، اعلام کرد که قطعه بسيار مشکل‌تر از آن است که بتوان به زودی يادش گرفت. تک‌نواز دوم پذيرفت که قطعه را اجرا کند، اما بعد، در آخرين لحظات، کنسرتو پيانوی ديگری از بتهوون را نواخت!
بنابراين، با وجود شنوايی به شدت رو به نقصان‌اش، بتهوون خود شخصاً نوازنده‌گی پيانو را بر عهده گرفت.
به عقيده‌ی من، يکی از عظيم‌ترين موومان‌ها در ميان تمام کنسرتوها، موومان دومِ اين کنسرتو است. چنان‌چه باک‌هاوس، پيانيستِ بزرگ آلمانی می‌گويد:” اين کنسرتوی موردِ علاقه‌ی من است، هانس ريختر آن را “کنسرتوی يونانی” می‌ناميد. او موومان دوم را گفتگويی در نظر می‌گرفت که ارفئوس* از خدايان جهنم آزادی اوريداسي** را تمنا می‌کند. و پيش از اين که خواهش‌اش برآورده شود، با مقاومت شديد مواجه می‌شود. و آن گاه درهای جهان زيرين گشوده می‌شوند و آنان رقص‌کنان به چشمه‌ساران و مناظر زيبای يونان وارد می‌شوند.”

*ارفئوس: شاعر و موسيقی‌دانِ افسانه‌ای که موسيقی او اين قدرت را داشت که حتی اجسام بی‌جان را به حرکت در آورد.
** اوريداسی: همسر ارفئوس که او نتوانست هنگامی که به جستجوی‌اش به سرزمين مرده‌گان رفته بود از دست هادس (خدای سرزمين مرده‌گان در اساطير يونان قديم) نجات بخشد و به اين ترتيب فرمان پلوتو را با بازگشت‌شان به سرزمين بالا، سرزمين زنده‌گان زير پا گذاشتند.

As my probably last selected concerto from Beethoven, I’ve chosen the second movement of his Fourth. Besides my love for this piece, I’ve selected it more due to file-size restrictions or I would have uploaded the whole concerto. Anyhow, I encourage you to find the whole piece and listen to it.
This concerto was written in 1805-1806 and was first performed by Beethoven himself in March 1807 at the palace of his patron, prince Lobkowitz. But it was only on December 22, 1808 that in a music marathon at Theater an der Wien people could hear it for the first time. The program started with Symphony no. 6, followed, in order, by the concert aria, “Ah, perfido”, two movements from the Mass in C major, the Fourth Piano Concerto, the Symphony no. 5, and, last but not least, the Choral Fantasy.
Due to his hearing problem Beethoven was looking for a soloist who could play the concerto. The first pianist contacted said the piece was too difficult to learn quickly. A second soloist agreed to perform it, but then, at the last minute, played instead another Beethoven concerto! So despite his seriously diminished hearing, he took the matter into his own hands.
One of the greatest movements among all concertos, in my opinion, is this concerto’s second. As Backhaus, the great German pianist says: “This is my favorite Concerto, Hans Richter called it the ‘Greek Concerto’. He saw the second movement as a dialogue in which Orpheus* pleads with the gods in Hell to set Eurydice** free. He meets with fierce resistance before his entreaties are rewarded. And then the doors of Underworld open and they dance out into a beautiful Greek Spring landscape.”

*Orpheus: A legendary Thracian poet and musician whose music had the power to move even inanimate objects and who almost succeeded in rescuing his wife Eurydice from Hades.

**Eurydice: The wife of Orpheus, whom he failed to rescue from Hades when he looked back at her and so violated the command of Pluto on their journey back to the upper world of the living.
